School Picnic & Field Day Help
All families are invited to our last day of school family picnic on Thursday, 5/16 at Soldotna Creek Park. Lunch will be served right around 12:00.
Celebrating as a school is so fun and a fine last day together. It also means we will need family assistance with making this day a great day. We need parents willing to help with cooking, Food prep, food service, materials delivery, and side dishes. Please sign-up to help using the button below.
Also, Mrs. Boonstra is looking for parent volunteers to help prepare for field day and/or lead a field day activity station. It is so good to see our parents lead classes in an afternoon of fun and laughter. Please use the Sign-up button below to help with Field Day.
Volunteer Appreciation
It is hard to believe were are nearing the end of the year. Looking back on all the events and activities we held this year, it is certain they would not have been as successful without our volunteers. We would like to recognize all of our volunteers who are so instrumental to our school’s success and family atmosphere at our School Picnic & Field Day. It will allow our students, staff, and others in attendance to share their appreciation for our wonderful school volunteers at a whole school event. We plan to hold a short recognition @ 11:30, just prior to serving lunch. We hope every family is able to attend and will join in thanking our school volunteers during our school picnic.
Calling All Library Books!
It is that time of the year when library books must be returned to the school shelves. Information about overdue library books have been supplied to teachers and are being emailed to parents. Please help your child return their books to the library. If the book is lost, then see the Librarian to pay for the book.
Yearbook Distribution Day
Yearbooks are in and will be given out to students on Wednesday, May 15, the day before the last day of school. However, in an effort to encourage library book returns and fee payments, we are offering early yearbook distribution beginning Monday, May 13th, for students who do not have overdue or missing library books. If you missed an opportunity to purchase a yearbook, we have a few extra copies for purchase in the office for $25 on a first come, first served basis.
Celebrating Staff - Mrs. Johnson
Mrs. Johnson began working as an instructional aide at SMCS in 2019. This year she is serving as an Intensive Needs Aide for our special services department. Mrs. Johnson spent most of her time here at SMCS as an aide for Mrs. Larned and supported many primary students in their use of Montessori Materials. Mrs. Johnson also serves as a robotics coach for our 4th grade students who are just getting started with learning building concepts and coding structures. This year, Mrs. Johnson served as our Yearbook Coordinator, a very big and important role in our school. Mrs. Johnson has had two students come through the Montessori program, and now her third child is a current 6th grader here at SMCS. So, Mrs. Johnson is a SMCS parent too! We are happy to have Mrs. Johnson’s can-do spirit and skill diversity as a contribution to our school. We are glad she is here at SMCS.
Other Fun Info
Band Concert Review
The last band concert of the year occurred on Monday, May 6th. It was a fantastic evening highlighting the developing skills of SMCS and SOEL students. The Concert Band kicked off the evening in a musical demonstration with incredible results. As we know, there is a challenge of learning notes, and how to make an instrument perform the way a student expects, and to do it in synchronicity with other students, while following the conductor, and playing sectional parts... that is HARD! The students did this and sounded magnificent! The Modern Band was super fun! This has been a shorter term learning process, but the students got an opportunity to perform using guitars, basses, drums, and keyboards. There were even electric versions used for each one of these instruments! You could sense the pride of the students who got to play. Student not only played, they also got to showcase and improvise in a riff, showing their unique creativity. Of course there were singers too to carry the tune. Again a big THANK YOU to Mr. Dahl and his efforts to build musical arts in our community. He is a foundation for these student’s futures, and we appreciate all his hard work. Well done to our students who also worked hard to grow these new skills.
Teacher Appreciation Meals
WOW! What a spread the teachers have had this week. The staff has been well-cared for with over the top preparation of meals for them to enjoy each day. It has been so wonderful and well received. Our kitchen has become a gathering place for staff to share time and conversation together. Sometimes it just takes something out of the norm to provide the reason to take a break and set aside time for joy and care.
Thank you to the many hands that have gone into offering this delightful surprise to our staff. We appreciate your appreciation!
6th Grader News
Skyview Visit - 5/13
6th graders will be traveling to Skyview Middle school for a 6th grade visit on Monday, May 13. Students will travel by bus with SoEl 6th graders to Skyview @ 9:00. They will return to the school by 12:30.
6th Grade Pizza Lunch - 5/14
A tradition going back to 2004, our 6th graders will take a short field trip to Froso’s on Tuesday, May 14 to enjoy a pizza lunch with their teachers, aides, and principal. It is a bit of a send off and a “thank you “ to our 6th graders for their time here at SMCS.
SMCS Garden - Planting Next Week
We are all set to make our garden planting efforts again this year. Mrs. Dixon will take on leadership of facilitating our efforts. Mrs. Carter has offered to lend her experience and Mrs. Rinke has also offered to volunteer to help. Mrs. Dixon’s class are prepping the garden beds May 8-10, and our classes will be planting May 13-15th. We are still welcoming parents who have a heart and passion for gardening to join in on this effort. We hope to utilize our parents gardening expertise to fulfill this work. Please reach out to Mrs. Dixon if interested. adixon@kpbsd.org
Nurse Tammy - Retiring
Can you believe it, Nurse Tammy is retiring. Wow, it just feel like Nurse Tammy is and always will be a part of SOEL and SMCS! However, she has determined that this will be her final year as our school Nurse, which is sad, but what gratefulness we have for her and her excellent care for our students and families.
We are planning our recognition here at the school for May 15th during our All School Slideshow Assembly. (There is also an event scheduled for the evening of May 9th, please call the school for details on that event.) In the meantime, if you have occasion to see Nurse Tammy, be sure to pass on your appreciation and well wishes to her. I know she will enjoy hearing from you.
District Invitation to KPBSD Alumni
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District (KPBSD) is interested in gathering insights to understand how well the district prepared alumni to meet goals for college and/or a career following graduation.
KPBSD has partnered with Hanover Research to conduct a brief Alumni Survey to gather valuable input. The KPBSD encourages alumni to share their experiences and opinions about the KPBSD to help us ensure that our academic and career-focused programs provide the best possible preparation for future graduates.
The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete and will close at the end of day on Friday, May 10th, 2024. Please submit responses prior to that date.
We appreciate your participation! Please click the link to begin the survey: KPBSD’s Alumni Survey.

Do not tell them how to do it. Show them how to do it and do not say a word. If you tell them, they will watch your lips move. If you show them, they will want to do it themselves.
